‘I want there to be hints of narrative everywhere in the image so that people can make up their own stories about them. But I don’t want to have my own narrative and force it on to them’ – Cindy Sherman
Printed for an exhibition at Mönchehaus Museum Goslar in 1999, this rare poster features Untitled 103, a photographic artwork created by and starring Cindy Sherman.
Taken in 1982, the image features Sherman in one of her many guises portraying a centrefold model. One of the leading artists of the Pictures Generation, Sherman’s work questions the representation of women in mass media. What at first glance appears to be a seductive image, on closer inspection has more to say – from her messily applied makeup to her subtle yet considered expression, Sherman invites the viewer to come to their own conclusions about her impactful works.
