Using backspace with lists dangerous or not?

This question is for Word 2003, I think it worked differently in W2K.
When positioning the cursor just behind the bullet in a paragraph formatted
with list style and pressing backspace, word removes the bullet but doesn't
merge the paragraph with the previous one.

Deleting 3 apparent blank pages before front matter starts

I have one version of my document where the unnumbered front matter is
preceeded by 3 blank pages (or they don't have anything on them that I can

Multilevel list, no numbers at L2
