MS backup on XP 3

I have Windows XP SP 3 on my computer
I installed MS backup.
when I try to start a backup a window pops up with:
"The files for the recovery diskette could not be created. The
operation was aborted"
I have an A drive. I have a 2TB IOSafe USB drive for backup & photo
storage that I just connected to the com ...

Never, never install *any* codec packs. They can cause all kinds of
mayhem.
It's far better to install a media player which incorporates all the
codecs you are likely to need -- far more than Windows Media Player.

XP Home Screensaver

Use laptop infrequently. Now note XP Home screensaver appearing and
wandering over monitor screen. Followed instructions for registry edit
and changed the Desktop Screen Saver values to 0. Screensaver continues
to appear. What did I miss?

Strange folders

I have folders under c: with strange names combining letters and
numbers that don't make any sense. They seem to be related to updates.
What are they and can I delete them?
