XP Sound and Video SR1710NX Desktop

Which utility in XP home is used to solve software and hardware issues with
no sound? Or Video problems? What would you do?
This Compaq Presario SR1710NX Desktop PC has perfect onboard sound.
XP Home Srv Pak 3.
An ASUS / ATI / Video card was added. The video works perfect but no SOUND.
No SOUND device ...

I had a computer freezing problem and was told it was the memory chip. Turns
out it wasn't actually the chip but somewhere in the slot it sits in. After
inserting a new chip the computer might run for a day or two before freezing.
As I have a laptop there doesn't seem to be much I can do beyond avoiding
that ...

Not sure where this pgm is installed, FireFox or XP but when I use the print
preview feature under file it used to show number pages it will take to
print the entire selected feature. Now it only shows 1 page regardless of
the actual number.
Is there a fix for this?

Colour Code Folders?

When you open My Computer and see all the folders on a
particular drive - can you colour code them or put an icon
on to speed up your searching?

Defrag-no room 2drives.

Not new to computers,but seems i am dumb-a-- about stuff never had to do
before.I have XP sp2,Drive C: has only 12% free Drive D:99%free space. So
don't have enough space to even defrag.have done all the remove
cookies,etc.Tells me to remove files i no longer use or are unneeded.What
constitutes unneeded, ...

My friend has his desktop icons filed in folders, such as video, audio,
and so on (i. e. he has lots of video-editing prog.s' icons inside a
desktop folder called "video" - keeps the desktop tidier).
He likes his normal Explorer window to show files in the "details" mode,
but when he opens one of these desk ...

add/remove programs not populating ...

My friend's (XP) computer has just started this symptom: add/remove
comes up, but then just sits there. It does _not_ say "please wait while
list is populated". If we try the "windows components" part, that _does_
appear.
We did a restart in safe mode, and then it _did_ populate. But coming
back to normal ...

I am trying to repair someones computer using Recovery Console using chkdsk
/r . The process starts and reaches some 61% and then reverts to 50% then
