Can't replace text

Using a powerpoint file made on a PC, on certain slides of tables I
cannot replace text. If I click on the table, i get a window that says
Format Picture. But none of the items in the window gives me the
option of inserting text. What should I do?

Inserting symbols is now done in the ToolBox Object Pallet, but these special characters are no longer available.
A work around may be to generate the text in Word 2008, ...
