MS MVP Hosts File Updates
I have the MS MVP hosts file installed and have been using a hosts file
updater to keep it current.

For some reason,. my Avast AV software has begun to recognize this updater
as a virus... Win32 Trojan-gen... which I am assuming is a false positive. I
want to stop using the updater until the conflict is resolved but I can't
find another way to get notification of hosts file updates.

There used to be a link on the MS MVP hosts file page that allowed users to
subscribe to email notifications of when the file was updated so they could
download the update from a link in the email, but I can't locate that link
on the page any more. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Re: MS MVP Hosts File Updates
Since I have never had to update my hosts file manually, I don't know the
procedure. The Faltron tool used to take care of that. I would appreciate
help in the updating process as well.

Re: MS MVP Hosts File Updates
Why not set the file(s) as exceptions in AVG so they don't get scanned, both
in Resident Shield and Scheduled & Manual Scan?

Problem solved.

Re: MS MVP Hosts File Updates
I'm using Avast, not AVG, and it's the Faltron updater that is setting off
alarms, not the hosts file.

Re: MS MVP Hosts File Updates
I understand it's not the hosts file. Set the updater as an exception in
your Avast.

Re: MS MVP Hosts File Updates
I can't. When the updater stopped responding I got rid of it. Now , if I try
to download the .exe file to reinstall it, Avast intervenes and stops the
download.

Well, for a short period of time, why not disable Avast realtime protection
or whatever it's called so you can download it!!!!!

Re: MS MVP Hosts File Updates
I disabled Avast, downloaded the updater, and added its path to Avast's
exclusions. The problem is that files listed in the exclusions are excluded
from scans but apparently not from detection.

I can't open the file without Avast reporting that it has detected a virus.
I tried adding the folder path to the exclusions and then added the file
name to the folder path but Avast sounded off on both of them.

I have reported what I believe to be a false positive to Alwil Software for
their investigation. I the meantime, can you tell me how to subscribe for
the email update notifications, please?

Re: MS MVP Hosts File Updates
You need to report the false positive to Avast.

Thanks, I already did that through their forum and via the report form in

 Drew-

From: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/updates.htm

Regretfully I can no longer accept any more subscribers to the MVPS HOSTS
file update mailing list. The response has far exceeded my expectations and
the list has out-grown the available software for providing a timely update.
I'd like to thank the tens of thousands that participated in the Mailing
list. I will continue to post the update notices on the HOSTS page as well
as on my blog.

I was wondering why I haven't gotten any notifications since March-Now I
know.
