3991946. VICO MAGISTRETTI. A table lamp, “Telegono”, Artemide or IKEA, 1960/70's. |
"A bright and friendly lamp in the window." Ok. "An effective reading lamp by the armchair." Check. "A table lamp designed purely to create ambience." I definitely need one of those. "A dining table lamp with well-balanced light that doesn't glare." Hmm, perhaps it's time to update mine. "A ceiling lamp providing good general lighting." Right, that could be useful. "A bedside lamp that won’t disturb the person sleeping next to you." Yes, as you can see—and as IKEA’s catalogue writers already pointed out in the 1970 edition—you should have a variety of different lamps at home.
On top of that, you need to pair the right bulb with the right lamp. Phew, all of this sounds complicated. But if I trust the furniture giant’s experts, perhaps I should start with an Italian design in premium ABS plastic. After all, that’s what was recommended in the 1970 catalogue when the lighting range expanded with a few gems from Italy.
One of these was Vico Magistretti’s 40 cm tall Telegono, available back then in red, black, white, or orange. |

Among the international design icons who have appeared in IKEA catalogues over the years, he’s undoubtedly one of the most prominent. You could spend ages on Google Images exploring his vast body of work and influence on both design and architecture. If you’re lucky, you might even stumble upon his golf handicap (9), his favourite football team (Inter), and his opinion on television (he hated it). Or, you could skip all that and simply admire the Telegono lamp itself. (Notice it lacks a base plate—surely a nod to cost-saving product design?) Back in the day, this red beauty was priced at 77 SEK. I’d like to believe it still has a promising future, not least in terms of value. But what kind of light bulb should I use? The catalogue specified a maximum 40W candle bulb. Can I still stick with that today? |

The Name of the Rose, a classic film set in an Italian monastery in 1327, revolves in part around illuminated manuscripts painted by the monks. Without giving away the plot, these exquisite medieval artworks play a significant role in the story. Today, such illuminated manuscripts can be incredibly valuable, but simpler versions can still be found at surprisingly affordable prices. It's quite remarkable to think that you can own a 500-year-old historical artifact for just a few hundred pounds.

Tobacco jars of various kinds have long been a niche collecting area. It may be a rather specialised field, but I know several people who have fully immersed themselves in the world of tobacco jar collecting. This particular jar was unusual and among the most charming I've come across. However, one has to question whether lead and tobacco make a good combination? As a storage jar, I can't recommend it, but as an incredibly charming collector's item, it definitely gets my thumbs up.
