A Deep Dive With Andreas Siesing |

In this story, we journey from 19th-century Chicago through 1980s Nevada to finally arrive in Sundsvall at Christmas 2024. It all begins with a restless cow, who on the morning of October 8, 1871, knocked over a lantern somewhere in Chicago, igniting a devastating fire that raged for three days and claimed approximately 300 lives. Fast forward to the era when every movie started with Michael J. Fox racing to school—skateboarding or biking behind a pickup truck through morning traffic. Teenagers donned high-top sneakers, blew gum bubbles, and those lucky enough had parents who understood that a Walkman with foam headphones was the ultimate necessity. The true sanctuaries of youth were arcade halls, where the flashing lights and chaotic sounds lured kids to spend their allowances on a few minutes of pixelated perfection. Amid this, kings of the arcade ruled, perfecting their moves on the rattling pinball machines, unleashing multiball after multiball with hair sprayed to
gravity-defying heights.
In 1987, arguably the most quintessentially '80s year, Williams Electronic Games in Enterprise, Nevada, released Fire!. Inspired by the Great Chicago Fire, the game invited players into a chaotic frenzy only the under-20s could hope to master. |
|
Conceptualized by Mark Sprengler, designed by Barry Oursler, and scored by Chris Granner, the game turned historical tragedy into escapist teenage bliss. Over 7,000 units were produced, along with a rare Champagne Edition—just 273 luxury models were made. Dive into the nerdiest forums, and you’ll find an entire lexicon: slingshots, stand-up targets, horseshoe lanes, plunger skill shots, and pop bumpers, to name a few. But if you'd rather play than theorize, you’re in luck—a Fire! machine currently resides in Sundsvall (a city that coincidentally burned down in 1888). A word of caution: before you insert your coin, brace yourself for an infernal soundtrack featuring a self-playing piano, fire alarms, and mechanical voices pleading for rescue. I believe you can save them—but don’t say I didn’t warn you. |

Ellen Trotzig's beautiful, Jugend-style landscapes of Skåne hold a special charm for me. Her works are highly sought after at auctions, indicating that many others are equally captivated by her artistry. However, this piece reveals a different facet of her talent. Here, she has depicted her friend, Constance Palmlund, in an intimate interior scene. Constance is nestled under a blanket on a daybed, engrossed in a book with a cup of tea—a scene that perfectly embodies the cozy activities of this time of year.

It's time to highlight these remarkable cabinets, which have now become so affordable that it's almost ridiculous. This particular cabinet is a simpler version of the masterwork cabinets that 18th-century carpenters were required to produce to become master craftsmen in their guild.
Today, many may find these cabinets heavy and space-consuming, but don’t forget that they can store nearly everything needed for a perfectly set table—your porcelain, glassware, table linens, and more. Moreover, these cabinets were forerunners of IKEA's flat-pack furniture, as they require assembly. The cabinet's upper section alone consists of six separate pieces that need to be put together. A masterpiece of craftsmanship and practicality! |

It's time to highlight these remarkable salsskåp (hall cabinets), which have now become so affordable that it's almost ridiculous. This particular cabinet is a simpler version of the masterwork cabinets that 18th-century carpenters were required to produce to become master craftsmen in their guild. Once their cabinet, along with a matching game table, was approved, the carpenter could open their own workshop and begin creating furniture according to their vision.
