4059295. LENA SVEDBERG. “Palmlänningarne, a folk play”. |
Swedish socialist prime minister Olof Palme as the Statue of Liberty, embraced by banker Marcus Wallenberg. Just before we head into the weekend, here’s a punch in the face of political art—light-years away from the harmless still lifes I usually amuse myself with at home. No apologies are made here, no concessions granted. On the contrary, it’s bold, direct, and straight to the point!
What we see is Lena Svedberg’s original design for the poster of Palmlänningarne – ett folklustspel, a production by Pistolteatern. This was raucous political theatre from an era when it was at its most relentless, defiant, and loud-mouthed.
Svedberg’s life burned bright but brief. Born in 1946 in Gothenburg, she spent her childhood in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where her father worked as an economic adviser to Haile Selassie. She later studied at the Kungliga Konstakademien in Stockholm. Her intense satirical illustrations, filled with grotesque imagery, gained attention when published in the notorious magazine PUSS. Svedberg lived a hard life and passed away in 1972, just 26 years old. |

I read that DN journalist Bo Madestrand once called Lena Svedberg "the Swedish welfare state" own Hieronymus Bosch. I had to Google him—only to discover a late Gothic Dutch painter who made a living depicting evil, hell, and death, selling his grotesque visions to the Spanish court. A phantasmagoric 16th-century artistry so wildly imaginative that, even 500 years later, one can’t help but shake their head in disbelief. No, I think I’ll stick to my flowers. That said, if there happens to be a museum acquisitions officer (wink wink, Moderna Museet) who is paying attention, there is now a rare and unmissable opportunity to acquire a magnificent (or, to some, magnificently ugly) historical artefact from a Sweden that no longer exists. |

Autographs are so much more than pen on paper, this unassuming little red book contains so many stories. It contains the signatures of many of the great rock musicians of the late 1960s, but the star of the show is of course Jimi Hendrix. Considered by many to be the greatest instrumentalist of all time, his tragic death at 27 means that autographs are relatively scarce and highly prized. It may surprise you to find out then, that when this autograph was obtained in 1967 Jimi Hendrix was bottom of the bill, offering support to the Walker Brothers on his first UK tour. A great glimpse into rock ‘n’ roll history, with solid provenance. It doesn’t get better than this!

My father was very fond of Anna Palm’s watercolours depicting the Royal Palace of Stockholm. A question that always came up was whether she had actually painted the correct number of windows on the palace. He and I never quite agreed on that.
One day, while attending one of the larger viewings in Stockholm, we once again found ourselves lingering in front of a watercolour of the Royal Palace—this time glowing in sunlight. Suddenly, my father remarked that the number of windows was, in fact, correct. He now knew this for certain because he had simply stood in the very same spot where Anna Palm once stood and counted them himself. |
