The Boston Crab. That was his finishing move. After that, opponents had to be carried out of the ring. Fellow wrestler Billy Blue River remembers him for his cauliflower ears, said to be the largest ever seen—or at least the most cauliflower-like. It’s all about Johnny “Swede” Carlin, a powerhouse born in Hagfors, Värmland, who built a wrestling career in America during an era when massive men in minimal shorts squared off in industrial halls, circus tents, and surely a few other places God had forgotten. He reportedly fought over 2,000 matches. In February 1934, he put an end to Billy Scharbert’s four-year streak of squeezing the fight out of opponents from coast to coast.
Now, Johnny Carlin’s life has been distilled into a single lot at Karlstad Hammarö Auktionsverk. It’s compact, contained in a cognac-brown leather briefcase bearing his name. |

Open it, and you’ll find autographed photos of boxers and wrestlers, promotional flyers, and various personal items. Among them is a ring that would make even the Phantom jealous. This is sports memorabilia at its very finest. If one could dream, perhaps a screenwriter might buy the whole collection and turn it into a movie. Just a thought.
Oh, and one more thing. There’s another ring—a truly wild piece in gold with knobby nuggets and a sparkling, dazzling diamond at its center. Carlin is said to have commissioned it sometime during his days in the great land across the Atlantic. It feels custom-made for a Hulk from Hagfors. You’ll find it in a separate lot. |

Sandhamn is a gem in the Stockholm archipelago that I have yet to visit. However, I often hear about the island from a colleague who has spent a lot of time there and speaks highly of it. My desire to visit Sandhamn only grows when I see Axel Sjöberg’s stunning painting from 1912. Sjöberg is regarded as one of the great interpreters of the Stockholm archipelago, and outside the inn on Sandhamn stands a statue of him, created by Carl Eldh. |
