Fat Lava ceramics have been described as 'The Next Big Thing' for some years now. These pieces of 1960s-1970s West German pottery have mostly remained affordable for the average buyer, but prices have climbed for desirable pieces. This Roth Keramik Guitar vase could have been picked up for under £50 20 years ago, which would have been a great investment as they can often sell for several hundred pounds today. We're all familiar with the thick, bubbly and bright glazes - but where does the name Fat Lava come from? Mistranslations of the word 'thick' to 'fat' in the early days of eBay!

Art Nouveau clouds. Now there’s a weather report I can get behind. They roll over Nils Kreuger’s green landscape like a foaming sea (or beer, if you’re so inclined). His signature horses are nowhere to be seen. Instead, a few cows graze with that carefree attitude that only cows seem to have. They’re going to get their fill of grass, whether the sky turns upside down or not. Kreuger’s brush is a barometer, sensitive to the slightest change in the air—a finely tuned instrument, a historical Swedish weather service. At least on Öland. I’m bringing my umbrella.

A week ago, I visited the lovely Ebeling Museum in Torshälla for the first time, just over an hour outside Stockholm. The museum is dedicated to the ceramicist and artist Allan Ebeling and his two daughters, Marianne and Harriet, who were also visual artists. Allan Ebeling has the somewhat unexpected birthplace of New York, but he had Swedish parents and later came to Sweden. Here, he worked at Boberg's faience factory and Upsala-Ekeby before settling in Torshälla in the 1930s, where he started his own ceramic workshop.
When I visited the museum, I was struck by two things: partly how versatile Allan Ebeling was, but also how underrated he is. I don't want to "spoil" too much because I think you should visit the museum, but there are sculptures in metal and wood, impressive ceramic creations, advertising drawings, and delightful oil paintings all mixed together. The quality of these works is often incredibly high, while Ebeling himself seems to have been quite a modest person. I read that when he once met Carl Milles, he introduced himself as "a potter from Torshälla."
So, make sure to plan a visit to Torshälla, and don't miss the many public sculptures around the town that bear Ebeling's signature. |
