Institutional modernism. How many of us are ready to start appreciating it? I’m looking at black-and-white photos from Strängnäs Hospital in Sweden, one of many establishments within the emerging mental healthcare system in the early 20th century, and thinking of a time when recovery took place in large, bright hospital wards. Like many similar institutions, Strängnäs Hospital ordered its furniture from Nordiska Kompaniet—convalescence through elegance, so to speak. At Crafoord Auctions Stockholm, there’s a table that has been through a lot, seen and heard its fair share, so to say. I believe it still has a future ahead.

If you’re not familiar with the name Ronald Stennett-Wilson, I’d love to introduce you to him. He began his career at an import company and was instrumental in introducing British retailers to Swedish glass in the 1950s. Inspired by Orrefors he transitioned into designing, becoming one of the 20th century’s greatest designers. His iconic Sheringham candlesticks for Wedgwood came in a variety of colours and heights, with one to nine discs on the stem. The process of making them was labour-intensive, so larger candlesticks can be expensive but smaller examples are often very budget friendly.

The American artist Jackson Pollock was a pioneer of Abstract Expressionism, with his paintings reaching their peak in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Many artists have drawn inspiration from his work, and one of the earliest to adopt Pollock’s signature drip technique was the Swedish artist Inger Ekdahl. This made her one of the first female Swedish artists to work in non-figurative art.
After studying under Isaac Grünewald and Otte Sköld, she traveled to Paris in the late 1940s, where she mingled with the great artists of the time, including Victor Vasarely. Whether it was Vasarely or her husband, the artist Eric H. Olson, who influenced her shift in the 1970s toward a more structured, optical style remains uncertain. However, Ekdahl was never afraid to experiment with new forms and techniques. She is even said to have painted using a modified vacuum cleaner, which blew paint onto the canvas, creating unpredictable abstract compositions. That must have been an incredibly fun way to paint!
