I absolutely love the dynamic energy of this print. Faith Ringgold's Mama Can Sing, Papa Can Blow print celebrates the vibrant culture of jazz and the power of music within the African American experience. Created as a series of silk-screen prints, this work reflects her signature storytelling style, blending bold colors, dynamic compositions, and expressive figures. The prints capture the energy and rhythm of jazz, portraying musicians and singers immersed in their art, evoking themes of joy, creativity, and resilience. Through this series, Ringgold honors the legacy of Black musicians while continuing her lifelong commitment to addressing themes of heritage, identity, and cultural pride in her artwork and makes me just want to dance!

This auction offers a curated selection of important Dalí works, but one of my favorites is Dali's Fantastic Beach Scene, which is a very rare example to come to auction. Only a few impressions were ever printed from the plate, and we believe only 4-5 of them exist.
This work takes us into Dalí's Surrealist world, with its disassociated images of a rocking chair, dismembered arms and living creatures. It truly captures the essence of Dalí; a desolate shoreline populated with enigmatic figures, melting forms, and distorted perspectives, evoking a sense of mystery and psychological depth. Dalí's use of fine lines and delicate shading enhances the ethereal quality of the composition, drawing viewers into a surreal world where reality and fantasy blur. This piece reflects his fascination with the subconscious, Freudian themes, and the fluidity of time and space, making it a compelling example of his surrealist vision.

There is something breathtaking about Dalí's bronzes and bas reliefs; the intricacy of the incised lines of Gala's body among Lincoln's head in this edition. Up close, the piece appears as an abstract, surreal composition dominated by soft, dreamlike forms and Dalí's signature motifs. However, when viewed from a distance, the fragmented elements resolve into the unmistakable likeness of Abraham Lincoln. The work reflects Dalí's interest in science, particularly in visual perception and the ways in which the human brain processes images. By merging surrealism with historical portraiture, Lincoln in Dalivision exemplifies Dalí's ability to blur the lines between reality and illusion, making it a compelling and interactive work of art.

Everyone can relate to the concepts of time and space, and this captivating composition by Salvador Dalí offers his enigmatic interpretation of the passage of time. Spatial Relationships in Time and Space, printed in 1973, draws our focus to a prominent clock face, with images from Dalí's other works illustrating each hour. Circular forms dominate this striking surreal landscape, featuring a low horizon line and figures strategically placed to emphasize scale and perspective. This thought-provoking piece is sure to inspire any Dalí enthusiast, serving as a surreal wake-up call to start the day.

Alexander Calder, best known for his monumental abstract corten steel sculptures and hanging mobiles, also excelled as a draftsman. Our auction features two lithographs based on caricatures of the human form. In one of the prints, we see several female bodies with extra limbs—black-and-white silhouettes alongside a vibrant red figure. Each depiction reveals the artist's keen attention to shape and form. Une famille de la bas, which translates from French as "A Family from Over There," highlights exaggerated, otherworldly attributes that are at once playful and alive.

Louise Bourgeois' Bed from 1977 explores themes of memory, intimacy, and psychological tension through an abstract depiction of a bed. The composition, created with bold lines and layered textures, conveys a sense of both comfort and confinement, referencing Bourgeois' recurring interest in the emotional weight of domestic spaces. The subject of beds resonated with Bourgeois not only because of their symbolism, but also because of their geometric form.

"All Things Are Delicately Interconnected" is one of Jenny Holzer's renowned Truisms, a series of succinct statements she began creating in the late 1970s. These Truisms distill complex ideas into brief, thought-provoking phrases. In 2020, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Holzer collaborated with Hauser & Wirth to produce a limited-edition print featuring this specific Truism. The project underscored the interconnectedness of global health and environmental challenges, with all proceeds benefiting conservation and COVID-19 relief efforts. This work exemplifies Holzer's commitment to using art as a medium for social commentary and public engagement.

Bid Protection
Bid Protection allows you to ensure you are not outbid by automatically increasing your bid to the next full increment if you are outbid during the live event. This protects you from being "sniped" by a single increment. Bid Protection can be entered on all items except the current lot and the next upcoming lot in a Live Auction.
Note: The extra increment won't be placed until the item is up for live bidding, so it is possible that you could be outbid by a bid placed prior to live bidding, such as another proxy bid, live proxy bid, mail bid, etc., which could result in your losing the lot by that one increment. For the same reason, it is also possible that a currently losing bid with bid protection placed could potentially win the lot once the lot is subject to live bidding and the Bid Protection increment(s) is placed. |
Buyer's premium
A Buyer's Premium is charged in addition to the successful bid. The applicable Buyer's Premium for bids placed with Heritage for this Auctions is 25% on the first $1,000,000 (minimum $49), 20% of any amount between $1,000,000 and $5,000,000, and 15% of any amount over $5,000,000 per lot.. |
 |
Heritage Live! allows you to place late proxy bids and compete live against the auction floor from your PC or mobile device*. We recommend placing proxy bids before the live session in the unlikely event either side experiences technical problems during the auction.
Note: Proxy bidding ends ten minutes prior to the session start time. Live Proxy bidding on Heritage Live now starts within 2 hours of when the auction opens for proxy bidding and continues through the live session. |
