A celebration of Scotland on the eve of Burns Night
The vast landscapes of Scotland have long offered an abundance of inspiration for poets and painters alike.
From Sir Edwin Henry Landseer’s majestic Monarch of the Glen, to Ron Lawson’s Hebridean Cottages, discover the inspirational beauty and power of Scotland’s natural wonders, in our Scotland collection.
Born more than a century later than his namesake – the poet and lyricist Robert Burns (1759-1796) who we celebrate on 25 January – the artist Robert Burns (1869-1941) was an early exponent of the Art Nouveau style in Scotland.
In his exquisite painting The Hunt, gilded gold leopards, jaguars, and white-bearded monkeys follow Greek goddess Diana and her nymph as they weave gracefully through thick jungle foliage. As their long flowing tresses billow behind them, magpies swoop high above their heads. Highly decorative and superbly executed, this painting was originally part of an ambitious first floor redesign for Crawford’s Tea Rooms in Edinburgh.
