On 31 October 1968, seven months after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., MoMa held the exhibition ‘In Honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’ that featured works by 60 leading American artists. Each artwork was donated and sold to benefit the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the civil rights organisation founded by Dr King.
Standing at 12-foot, and made up of four panels, Robert Indiana donated ‘Love Rising (The Black and White Love)’ to the benefit, and dedicated the work to the Nobel Peace Prize winner and activist.
