Escher: Life and Artistic Journey
Born in 1898 in the city of Leeuwarden, Netherlands, Escher exhibited a fascination with drawing and geometry from an early age. After studying graphic arts at the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem, he began exploring techniques such as woodcut and lithography, which would become hallmarks of his work. His life was marked by extensive travels, including long stays in Italy, which deeply influenced his artistic vision. Escher transformed his observations of the natural world into works that challenge perception, employing geometric patterns and optical illusions to create impossible yet precise and fantastical universes.

The exhbition in Palazzo Mazzetti
The exhibition in Asti is organized into six thematic sections, offering a detailed insight into Escher's career and artistic approach. The first section, “The Beginnings” showcases his early works, influenced by Art Nouveau and his mentor Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, who encouraged his entry into the world of graphic arts. The second section, “Italy” delves into his connection with the country, highlighting drawings and prints inspired by Italian landscapes and villages that shaped his production between 1922 and 1935. From there, visitors are immersed in his "Tessellations" a central theme in many of his works, inspired by the Islamic decorations of the Alhambra in Granada.

The following sections delve into other fascinating aspects of Escher's art. In "Metamorphoses" Escher showcases his ability to transform patterns into fluid and constantly changing forms, while “Structures of Space" examines his reflections on surfaces, geometric solids, and topological distortions, as seen in the famous “Hand with Reflecting Sphere” (1935). Finally, "Geometric Paradoxes" presents his most iconic and impossible creations, which challenge the laws of perspective and logic.
In addition to the artworks, the exhibition features interactive installations, explanatory videos, and educational materials that enhance the visitor experience. These resources help contextualize Escher's creative processes and his connection to mathematics and science.
